Webinar on Using the New CMS Nursing Home Affiliation Data On June 28, 2023, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) began to publish on its Nursing Home Care Compare website information regarding a facility’s affiliation with other nursing homes under common ownership or control. In addition, CMS published a data set entitled “Nursing Home Affiliated Entity Performance Measures.” For the first time, consumers will be able to see how nursing homes in a chain or under common ownership or control perform in various quality measures, including the Care Compare Five-Star rating system, staffing levels, regulatory violations, and many other performance measures.
For nursing home residents and their families, making a decision about what facility to choose to reside in can be a daunting and frustrating process. Knowing who owns a nursing home can be a matter of life and death. For instance, research shows that residing in a nursing home owned by private-equity investment organizations raised resident mortality by 10%. However, for too long, it has been difficult to determine who actually owns a nursing home. CMS’s new affiliation data is a critical and important step in ensuring increased transparency in nursing home ownership.
On July 27, 2023, at 1 p.m. ET, Consumer Voice will hold a webinar to demonstrate how to use this newly available information. We will provide you with step-by-step guidance on how to access and interpret ownership and performance data.

Watch the Recording of the Virtual Rally for Strong Staffing Standards Last week, AFL-CIO, SEIU and Consumer Voice held a virtual rally to let the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) know that a strong federal staffing standard is the only way to end the long-term care crisis in our country. During the rally, workers, residents and family members shared their stories and expressed their support of a federal staffing standard in long-term care facilities. Watch the recording of this event.
CMS is gearing up to release a proposed rule that would establish the first ever federal staffing standard for nursing homes. This standard will lay the foundation for improving care and care jobs, and holding nursing home corporations accountable for actions — or inactions — that prioritize profits over people.

Resident's Voice Challenge 2023 Creative writing and artistic expression are meaningful and compelling ways to highlight the importance of residents’ rights and how these rights can be carried out in all long-term care settings. The Resident’s Voice Challenge, a part of Residents' Rights Month in October, encourages residents to submit essays, poems, artwork, drawings, or videos related to the theme.
This year’s theme emphasizes a community of long-term care residents coming together to make their voices heard. As part of the Resident’s Voice Challenge, we are inviting residents to create videos amplifying their voices. Residents are encouraged to create a video sharing who you are and how you amplify your voice by answering the questions: What does it mean to be heard and how do you make yourself heard? Alternatively, residents can respond to the Resident’s Voice Challenge in writing (essays, poems, word collages), artwork (posters, paintings, drawings), audio (songs or spoken word), or photos.
Visit our website for more information on how to participate. Submissions are due September 1, 2023.
