CMS Issues Memo Regarding Updates to Nursing Home Data and Care Compare

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) have issued a memo (QSO-24-14-NH) regarding several actions by CMS.  CMS will:

  • Post new guides for nursing home consumers on the medicare.gov Nursing Home Care Compare website;
  • Implement the new staffing level case-mix adjustment methodology for staffing measures reported on Nursing Home Care Compare;
  • Revise the nursing home staffing turnover methodology so that employees who are on leave for 90 days or less are not counted as staff turnover; and
  • Post data on characteristics of nursing homes and their residents on data.cms.gov.

Read the memo.

New Podcast Episode on the Impact of Guardianship on Residents of Long-Term Care Facilities

Podcast logoGuardianship is a tool intended to support individuals who have lost the capacity to make decisions for themselves. However, guardianship is an extreme step and can have a devastating impact on a person's well-being. In a new episode of the Pursuing Quality Long-Term Care podcast, we discuss guardianship over residents of long-term care facilities, less restrictive alternatives, and strategies for supporting residents under guardianship.

Special Guests:

  • Alison Hirschel, Director of the Michigan Elder Justice Initiative
  • Emily Miller, Managing Attorney of the Crime Victims Legal Assistance Project of the Michigan Advocacy Program

Long-Term Care Residents: Participate in the Resident's Voice Challenge

RRM logoLong-term care residents have the right to self-determination and to use their voice to make their own choices. This year's Residents' Rights Month theme, The Power of My Voice, emphasizes self-empowerment and recognizes the power of residents being vocal about their interests, personal growth, and right to live full, enriching lives.

In preparation for Residents' Rights Month in October, residents are invited to participate in the Resident's Voice Challenge. Residents are encouraged to get creative in demonstrating the power of their voice. Use these questions to inspire you:

  • What makes you feel empowered?
  • What types of interests, hobbies or activities enrich your life?
  • How do you use your voice to empower yourself and others?

Consider using a unique medium to share your voice – make a video or audio recording describing what makes you feel empowered or what enriches your life, read a piece of original poetry or a short story, play original music or sing a song, show and tell us about your artwork, etc.

Learn more about how to participate. Entries are due September 1.
