This bill would end forced pre-dispute arbitration in contracts between consumers and corporations, including nursing homes and assisted living communities. You can read the bill here. Attorneys General Urge CMS to Protect Nursing Home Residents Attorneys General from six states sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) challenging a proposed federal rule that would weaken nursing home regulations. Attorneys General from New York, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada and Oregon outlined several recommendations and stated that "CMS' proposed regulations place too great an interest on minimizing facilities' obligations." In a press release, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said, "The bottom line is that these proposed rules do not improve the lives of vulnerable residents; they improve the lives of business executives and the bottom lines of nursing home businesses across Michigan and the nation."Read the letter to CMS »
Webinar on Medicaid Retroactive Coverage
Justice in Aging and the AARP Public Policy Institute are holding a webinar Tuesday, October 1 at 2:00pm ET entitled "Medicaid Retroactive Coverage: What's at Stake for Older Adults When States Eliminate this Protection?" Medicaid retroactive coverage permits states to provide payment for care and services that an individual recieved up to three months prior to applying for Medicaid. This coverage is especially important for people who experience health emergencies, need long-term services and supports following an illness or are facing other unexpected health care needs. The webinar will highlight key findings from Justice in Aging's new issue brief and will discuss a survey of states that have eliminated retroactive coverage and the implications for older adults, families, and providers.
