New Resources from the Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition

The Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition is a group of individuals and organizations, including Consumer Voice, that came together in July 2022 to prioritize recommendations from the 2022 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report on nursing home quality. The Coalition’s purpose is to develop and promote action plans to address those priorities in partnership with national, state, and local organizations, including professional associations, nursing home providers, clinicians, researchers, advocates, Long-Term Care Ombudsmen, Quality Innovation Network-Quality Improvement Organizations, nursing home residents, and others.

The Coalition has released two new resources to support nursing home residents:

A Guide to Strengthening Resident Councils in Nursing Homes intends to help residents, and those who support them, create a successful Resident Council. It describes the purpose and benefits of a Resident Council, gives guidance on forming or strenghtening a Council, and provides problem-solving tips on common issues that could arise.

A Guide to Addressing Resident Goals, Preferences and Priorities (GPP) is meant to support nursing home staff in addressing each resident's GPPs. It offers resources and recommendations to implement a standardized process.

Resident's Voice Challenge Entries Due September 1

RRM logoResidents’ Rights Month, held in October, is an opportunity to focus on and celebrate the dignity and rights of every individual receiving long-term services and supports.

Residents have the right to self-determination and to use their voice to make their own choices. This year's Residents' Rights Month theme, The Power of My Voice, emphasizes self-empowerment and recognizes the power of residents being vocal about their interests, personal growth, and right to live full, enriching lives.

How to Participate in the Resident's Voice Challenge - Submissions Due September 1

Residents of long-term care facilities are encouraged to get creative in demonstrating the power of their voice. Use these questions to inspire you:

  • What makes you feel empowered?
  • What types of interests, hobbies or activities enrich your life?
  • How do you use your voice to empower yourself and others?

Consider using a unique medium to share your voice – make a video or audio recording describing what makes you feel empowered or what enriches your life, read a piece of original poetry or a short story, play original music or sing a song, show and tell us about your artwork, etc.

How to Submit

  1. Read the full Resident's Voice Challenge Criteria before submitting.
  2. Email submissions to info@theconsumervoice.org.
    • Include a mailing address with your submission for residents to receive certificates of participation.
    • Submissions featuring photo or videos must include completed release forms for each resident.

Resource Highlight - Advocating for Rights and Better Care

Advocating-for-Rights-Better-Care-in-NHs_Page_1.jpgConsumer Voice's fact sheet, Advocating for Rights and Better Care, provides tips for nursing home residents and families for advocating for change in their nursing facilities and advocacy strategies for impacting long-term care policy.  Nursing home residents have the right to quality, person-centered care.  But too often, residents find themselves in situations where their rights are being violated and their needs are not being met. It is important to know the steps to take to advocate for yourself or your loved one when this happens. If things go wrong, there are specific actions you can and should take to try and change the situation within the facility. There are also ways to advocate for change on a broader level outside of the facility.
