November’s elections showed that a rising generation of young, diverse Texans is emerging as an electoral giant. Soon 1 in 3 eligible voters in this state will be under the age of 30.
Our state's leaders are scared of the progressive wave that our votes will bring to Texas. They are desperate to hold on to power by keeping young Texans and communities of color out of the polling booth. And to do that, they’re pushing an extreme voter suppression bill in the Legislature, SB9.
For example, SB9 would impose severe penalties on people who make honest mistakes while voting or registering to vote. It also includes a vague provision that could lead to the prosecution of volunteers by giving immense power to anyone who suspects voter fraud, from poll watchers to law enforcement.
Provisions like these really are about intimidating people who want to participate in the democratic process.
