At 47, I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in my left breast. Breast cancer runs in my family—my grandmother was diagnosed at 52 and showed incredible resilience, living until 93. Her strength inspires me every day.

My journey began with a clear mammogram in December 2023, but when I noticed nipple discharge, I trusted my gut and pushed for answers. After seeking multiple opinions, an MRI in April 2024 revealed a small tumor near my nipple, and a biopsy confirmed it was malignant. I was diagnosed with stage 2A breast cancer, ER-, PR-, and HER2+, which shaped my treatment plan. I began chemotherapy in May and completed my sixth and final round in September. In October 2024, I underwent a double mastectomy with reconstruction. My journey isn’t over—I continue maintenance therapy every three weeks for the next year—but I am cancer-free and focused on the road ahead.

This experience has reinforced the power of self-advocacy, the importance of early detection, and the strength found in community. My greatest motivation comes from my loving family, my career as a therapist, and my deep passion for life. Now, I’m channeling that passion into action by leading Breast Friends of Bel Air (BFBA) as the team captain for this year’s Annual Amanda Hichkad Celebration Walk. BFBA is a local breast cancer support group, and we are walking to raise funds for Upper Chesapeake's cancer center, which provides essential supportive care at no cost to those facing cancer in the community.
