I have decided to JUMP IN for Women’ Heart Health again this year! With your generous donations IN 2021, my team 'Beats and Hearts' successfully raised over $1000.
Why am I doing this? Heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death for women around the world, but women are under-diagnosed, under-treated and under-studied when it comes to cardiovascular disease. I’m taking this challenge for all the beautiful hearts in my life and for me!
My heart health matters and so does yours! I have lost too many friends to this disease and much too young. I see this challenge as an opportunity to educate and give back to my community. And, as a woman with a physical disability, it is even more important to get active. I can't decide to go out for a run, hop on a treadmill or cycle to get my exercise. Many of my work-outs come from doing everyday chores such as loading and unloading a washer, sweeping the floors, vacuuming, gardening, cooking/chopping/mixing, dancing/singing to music at my favourite music festivals. All these activities equals a workout! I’m exercising at my pace and in my space.
Throughout September I will participate in a 30-day activity challenge where I will get active for 30 minutes a day for 30 days. I may not always be able to do 30 mins straight of heart rate raising activity and that’s ok! I may have days where I will do 3 – 10min workouts or 2 – 15 min bursts of activity. The most important thing is to get moving and all in support of women’s heart health at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation!
By committing to this challenge, we are not only taking care of US, but we are also investing in Women’s heart health at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Through this initiative, we will help raise awareness for women and heart disease. The immediate and long-term benefits for women’s heart health will be addressed through unique and unparalleled programs, services, and research initiatives offered at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
