Bless You! Collect the mucus of a humpback whale.
One of the many challenges with studying the health of free roaming whales is knowing what is going on inside them. Diseases are generally only discovered after the animal is dead and a necropsy is performed.
As part of a research project, we are flying a small 'drone' through the cloud of droplets produced when a whale exhales. Collecting and analyzing this blow sample is a non-invasive method that can tell us what harmless bacteria are found in healthy whale lungs and identify other more harmful organisms that could be causing disease. Every snot sample collected is a step towards understanding whale diseases.
