Take the Straws Upon Request Pledge!

Single-use plastics are a problem. Every minute, the equivalent of one garbage truck full of discarded plastics is dumped into the ocean. This plastic persists for hundreds of years and can kill marine animals by entangling them, poisoning them or blocking their digestive tracts.

Instead of fully degrading in the environment, these plastics eventually break down into smaller pieces called microplastics, which have been found widespread in fish and other marine animals, as well as in tap and bottled drinking water.

That’s why VPIRG has launched the Straws Upon Request pledge as part of a much broader campaign we’re waging on single use plastics. We’re asking Vermont restaurants and bars to help reduce plastic straw consumption by taking the Straws Upon Request pledge.

Customers who want a straw could still get one (preferably a non-plastic one), but employees would only provide straws upon request of the customer. Fewer plastic straws mean a win for the environment, and a win for businesses too.

If you own or manage a business that serves beverages, please join the movement away from single-use plastic straws. Please add your business to the pledge!

Straws Upon Request Pledge

I pledge that our establishment will adhere to a "straws upon request" policy. Plastic straws will only be made available upon request, and "Straws Available Upon Request" will be printed on our menus at our earliest convenience.
