The threatened Brown Pelican's method of finding and catching fish is amazing. He will soar and then dive, scooping copious amounts of water into his pouch, only to release the water but retain the contents. Pelicans are often wrongly identified usually to their detriment as competitors with people for fish, and they often become entangled in our fishing line and hooks. Scoma suffered a wing injury possibly from fishing line and although it healed, he cannot fly or fish as one of his species should.
On sighting prey, a pelican plunges with its wings half-folded, from heights of up to 50 feet, surfacing to drain water from its bill before swallowing the fish.
