The raccoon is a true native American. Its small family includes the ringtail, kinkajou and coati, and with one exception (the Red Panda in Asia), all of them originated only in the Americas. Raccoons are highly intelligent, vocal, social animals that have adapted well to living among another intelligent, vocal, social animal: the human. Due to their success in adapting to human environments, raccoons get mixed reviews by people. Some people enjoy seeing them and encourage their presence by offering food. Others view them as nuisance animals.
The raccoon's hands contain more than ten times the nerve endings of a human hand, and they hunt by exploration of small animals living in cracks and crevases.
