Baby birds are voracious consumers of insects because of the high protein content the invertebrates provide. Mockingbirds are especially fond of beetles, ants, bees, wasps and grasshoppers.
Songbird babies in foster care require hand-feeding every 30-45 minutes from sunup to sundown, until they are able to learn to feed themselves. This care usually continues for 3 to 4 months.
