Elana Mater is Running for Water
I am running for running water!
Each morning I return from my workout cold and sweaty and jump into a wonderfully warm shower. Dreading the chill of stepping from my heated sanctuary, I forget that even just a five-minute shower uses more water than the typical slum dweller in a developing country uses in a whole day.
It is all too easy to take for granted the safe, affordable and reliable access I have to water, a human right that should transcend all man-made boundaries. But an estimated 2.6 billion people worldwide do not have access to adequate sanitation and approximately 1 in 8 do not have access to safe drinking water, leading to nearly 6,000 water-related deaths per day, most of them children.
I have chosen to raise money for an organization that envisions a world where all people have access to this basic human right. Water For People is a non-profit that works in developing countries to help communities design, implement and maintain affordable and sustainable water delivery systems and sanitation facilities. They provide the expertise and resources to develop an autonomous water infrastructure. And this autonomy is what distinguishes Water For People from other organizations. The longevity of their projects far exceeds most water charities, with 90% of their projects still successful after 10 years. And this is important because all too often, philanthropic organizations start a water project with the best intentions, but only focus on the immediate infrastructure/costs while forgetting the expertise/costs/materials required for maintenance.
In order to raise money for Water For People, I will be running the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim on October 2, 2010. The run totals 42-miles with almost 11,000 feet of elevation gain. It is considered one of the classic ultra-runs…and I promise I will drink only enough water to keep properly hydrated, but not a drop more!!!
Your contribution would be greatly valued. As a token of appreciation for a donation, the Portland Water Bureau has agreed to supply you with a 5-minute shower timer unless you indicate in the Comment line below, "No thanks."
Thanks to all!!!
