A Yiddish World Remembered DVD
In A Yiddish World Remembered, the Emmy winning PBS documentary by Andrew Goldberg, the story of Jewish life in Eastern Europe is brought to life again by some of the remaining eyewitnesses. Narrated by Academy Award nominated actor Elliott Gould and accompanied by never-before-seen archival films, vintage photographs, and traditional Klezmer and cantorial music, the documentary takes an enlightening look at this unique and all-but-vanished way of life. For those in rural communities, there was often no running water or electricity. For many, anti-Semitism was a part of daily life. But for everyone, crowded conditions and poverty seemed to prevail. Despite these trials, through the eyes of the individuals interviewed, we learn that Jewish communities were close-knit and often even joyous places to live. This television special explores everything from the fascinating language of Yiddish to the Rabbis and Rebbes that often ran the communities to the powerful Jewish movements of Khasidism, Bundism and Zionism. This DVD contains over 20 minutes of bonus footage and interviews not seen in the broadcast.

BOOK: Rock and Roll ...and the Best Goes On by Cousin "Brucie" Morrow (signed)
Following up on Doo Wop: The Music, the Times, the Era, this retrospective celebrates the rock scene of the 1960s and early 1970s. Legendary deejay Morrow and Maloof, former editor-in-chief of Guitar, note the eruption of drugs, radicalism and freakery into rock during the 1960s, but politely spare us the juicy details we expect from a man with the kind of all-access pass Morrow had. Morrow makes prim reference to the Doors' controversy-courting frontman Jim Morrison and to Ozzie Osbourne's reputation as a very strange person. Morrow does highlight the Beatles' first performance at Shea Stadium in 1965--which he himself emceed. The screams of 55,000 fans were so loud that Ed Sullivan nervously turned to Morrow and asked, Is this going to be dangerous? The authors include sidebar appreciations of individual bands and illuminate, through their photographic documentation, the apocalyptic changes in, among other things, men's hair styles during the 1960s. Descriptions of pop culture symbols--the 1965 Mustang; Batman TV series; The Graduate--help put perspective on the music of the era. The authors cover everything, from the British Invasion (Rolling Stones, Yardbirds, etc.) to Motown (including the Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas), ending with the Doobie Brothers, Allman Brothers, Steely Dan and Pink Floyd. paperback, 320 pages

DVD: Great Performances: The Audition
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Susan Froemke, The Audition looks at the intense pressures young opera singers face as they struggle to succeed in one of the most difficult professions in the performing arts. The feature-length documentary takes you behind the scenes at the Metropolitan Opera's National Council Auditions, where each year thousands of hopefuls compete for a cash prize, the chance to sing on the Met stage - and the opportunity to launch a major operatic career. The film covers the dramatic week leading up to the finals of the 2007 auditions, focusing on three very different tenor contestants: Michael Fabiano, a fiery 22-year-old grappling with his inner demons; Alek Shrader, a 25-year-old with movie-star looks who attempts to sing nine high C's in the fiendishly difficult aria that made Pavarotti a star; and Ryan Smith, who at the age of 30, and with little formal training, is pursuing his dream of an operatic career. The Audition is both a suspenseful competition narrative and a revealing backstage look at what it takes to make it as a contemporary opera singer. Running Time: 157 min. Bonus Features: - Renée Fleming hosts a discussion with fellow National Council winners Susan Graham and Thomas Hampson - Audition for the Met: 2007 Southwest Region Competition
