Wayside Waifs

Veterinary Care

Wayside Waifs is proud of the high level of veterinary care we are able to provide to our shelter animals. Our medical team is comprised of veterinarians and veterinary technicians. Not only do we offer routine and basic care such as vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries for our pets, we provide a wide array of medical services to enhance the future and quality of life for our shelter animals.

Medical services available for our shelter pets include:

  • Dental cleanings and general extractions
  • Tumor removal
  • Amputation
  • Enucleation (eye removal)
  • Blood work
  • X-rays
  • Hernia repair, etc.
  • Spay and neuter surgery

Wayside Waifs does not provide veterinary care to the public at this time. To find a veterinarian, check out our veterinary partners.

Veterinarian Preceptorship Program

Wayside Waifs is also dedicated to helping third and fourth year veterinary students gain experience in shelter medicine. Participating students spend two weeks in our clinic and work hand-in-hand with our skilled veterinary staff. With the addition of on-site housing, we can comfortably accommodate up to two students at a time. During their stay, students will experience every facet of shelter medicine and shelter operations.

We strive to make our students' experiences unique. Some students prefer to stay strictly in the clinic and gain as much medical experience as possible. Other students enjoy the opportunity to learn more about shelter operations and spend some of their time shadowing other departments. Students can adapt their schedules based on their personal interests.

Students working at Wayside Waifs have the opportunity to:

  • Shadow our admissions team to learn more about the intake process
  • Work with our behavior team to assess animals for adoption
  • Work with our adoption staff to learn the basics of adoption interviews and matching adopters with the perfect companions
  • Have as much client interaction as they choose
  • Be exposed to dogs and cats of all ages, small mammals and the occassional reptile
  • Most importantly, receive hands-on veterinary experience, including seeing shelter and adopted patients, diagnosing medical problems, prescribing treatment protocols, and performing surgeries daily.
