A multitude of diseases are often misdiagnosed or overlooked entirely in women, because medical research, diagnostic tools, and treatments are frequently based on male physiology. There is momentum on the issue of gender equity in medical research but more must be done. Help spread the word and urge your legislators to act.
Hadassah is a proud endorser of the bipartisan Research for All Act (H.R. 2101), reintroduced in April by Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN) and Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY). The Research for All Act would help ensure that U.S.-funded biomedical research -- from the most basic, cellular-level studies to late-stage clinical trials -- accounts for differences between the sexes and yields therapies and cures that are tailored appropriately for both men and for women. It would also require the FDA to ensure all medical products granted expedited approval still include adequate subgroup analysis and guarantee product safety and effectiveness for women and men. Last year, Hadassah welcomed the Senate's passage of Resolution 242 -- sponsored by all 20 female senators -- which urged action on gender disparities in medical research. A related resolution (H.Res 458), sponsored by 82 congresswomen, is currently being considered in the House.
Urge your Representatives to co-sponsor H.Res 458 and Research for All Act and encourage all elected officials to prioritize gender equity in medical research.
