Tragically, slavery remains a modern-day reality for an
estimated 27 million people worldwide—more than at any other time in history.
Every day, men, women and children are forced, defrauded, or
coerced into labor or sexual exploitation. According to the Department of
Justice, 300,000 children are at risk for becoming victims of trafficking in
the U.S. each year. According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited
Children as many as 100,000 American children are victims of child sex
trafficking each year, and more than 1,000 children are arrested and charged
with prostitution per year, even though many of them are beaten, threatened, or
otherwise coerced into sex work.
Trafficking and its related crimes not only harm those
involved; they also undermine the social, political and economic fabric of the
nations where they occur by devaluing individuals, demeaning women, and
increasing violence and crime. Learn More>
Many state legislatures are also working to combat trafficking. For the first time in 2016, laws to criminalize child sex trafficking were in place in all 50 states. But more still needs to be done.
Legislation is pending in Congress and in states across the
country to help at-risk runaway and homeless youth, prevent large corporations
and the U.S. government from funding the trafficking enterprise through
contracting or supply chains, and create safe harbors to support—not
punish—trafficking victims. Urge Congress and your state legislators to continue this
momentum to support victims of human trafficking!
Hadassah also supports the No Such Thing campaign, which calls on media outlets to stop using the term “child prostitute,” and end this concept once and for all. Sign the petition here>
