2024 Ride to Defeat ALS: Blue Ridge

CharlieMack

Riding in Memory of Charles McElhose Sr.

This is the third year team CharlieMack is riding to support this worthy cause. CharlieMack the team was named to honor my dad in 2022 when he was struggling with a form of ALS called Pseudobulbar Palsy.

Where with some ALS patients, symptoms may start with walking difficulties or weakness in the hands, my dad's started with slurred speech and swallowing difficulties. It took him a while to come to grips with it. He lost his ability to speak and sing, which was crushing for him because he had been a well known Karaoke Host in the Baltimore area for years and he loved to sing! He was known as Karaoke Charlie, "The King of Karaoke".

As his condition progressed he struggled with walking and balance, then with head control, and ultimately was able to only do the most limited movement.

The ALS association provided help in a number of ways, but the true God sends were the Tobii Tablet that allowed him to still communicate with us when everything else would have left him unable to, and a ramp that allowed us to get him in and out of the house.

Dad passed away in the fall of 2022, but our committment as a family to help others in this way continued last year, and again this year as we know firsthand how difficult this disease is and the important role the ALS association fills in helping people to manage.
