My husband Doug was diagnosed with ALS on Feb. 11th, 2019. This was news that rocked our world. What followed, and continues to this day, is an incredible journey of ups and downs, twists and turns, tears and laughter, as well as an incredible sense of gratitude. Some days are good, some days aren’t, but what we do know is that so far, we have been incredibly lucky. Doug seems to be progressing very slowly which is atypical of this diagnosis about which there truly is so little known.
Although initially Doug didn’t want to share the news with anyone, we all realize that it is only by sharing our story, encouraging others, and advocating for funding that we will finally begin to impact the thousands of patients and families that are devasted when they hear the words, “You have ALS”. Truly, nothing can prepare one for this diagnosis.
Since day one, we have been told by many doctors and researchers that they feel a breakthrough is right around the corner. Unfortunately, to date, this has not been true. There are however many new drugs in the pipeline but clinical trials and ultimately FDA approval takes years. Years most ALS patients do not have. Money is desperately needed to fund lifesaving research not only for a cure but for an accurate and clear tool for diagnosis. Any support you are able to give is greatly appreciated.
I will ride the 2021 Ride to Defeat ALS on September 19th as a member of Team Hope in Doug’s honor. We would love to have you join us if you are interested! All money raised will support the ALS Association as they work to fund research to find a cure and to also support ALS patients and families. They have been very gracious in helping us to find a way forward.
Thank you for any support you are able to give.
With hope,
Dolly
