Ben Flowe's team, My Mind is My Weapon (MMisMW) is gearing up for its 8th Walk to Defeat ALS!
Ben was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis / ALS in Dec, 2014 and he has been pushing back against it for 9 years. He is an active partner in his law firm and a rock in our family. Through his wry, Duke wit, his passion for solving complex legal problems and his steely determination, Ben shows us how to "just keep swimming", to live life no matter what you are coping with. He named this team My Mind is My Weapon, because his mind never seems to stop and it is his greatest push-back weapon.
MMisMW has three goals :
- Raise awareness about ALS.
- Support members of our community coping with ALS.
- Raise money for ALS research.
The average cost, per year, to care for a patient is $200,000. Really and truly. It is a staggering figure to individuals and families coping with the impacts of ALS. Research for ALS can easily jump from $500,000 to millions of dollars. The good news is that research has exploded over the past 3 years. I just wish breakthroughs and better, more effective treatments could happen much faster for the pALS (patients of ALS). Hope is in the research!
The ALS Association consistently raises awareness about ALS and it is a very strong partner in funding ALS research. They support the DC/MD/VA community of ALS patients with state-of-the-art technology (text-to-voice apps and eye gaze programs, to cite a few), group support via an incredible group called "Hal's Pals", and helping all of us navigate the crazy-expensive costs of living with ALS.
With your generous help, we exceeded our $30,000 goal last year and even managed to earn the Wayne Fuller Award for the top fundraising team! Ben was so proud of his team! Help us surpass our goal this year by joining TEAM: My Mind is My Weapon.
