As-salaam alaikum and hello family and friends!
Our dear Nayyar Sultana Khan passed away on Tuesday, December 10th, 2019. She was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) in 2007 and had first observed symptoms in 2005. For the last several years of her life, she lost control of voluntary motor functions, and even involuntary functions such as breathing become increasingly difficult. She communicated via the eye-gaze method through her Tobii Dynavox.
While there is still no cure, a lot of valuable research and awareness occurred in the past few years including the 2014 “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge”. The hope is that one day we will find a cure for ALS so no one else will ever have to suffer from this fatal disease.
The resources for additional research come from awareness and fundraising campaigns like the annual Walk to Defeat ALS event held throughout Florida. Furthermore, groups like The ALS Association help with medical necessities and temporary respite assistance which provides much needed relief to ALS patients and their family members living with them.
To prioritize the safety of all involved, this year we are giving every participant the tools they need to host their own "ALS Walk Your Way" experience that fit your everyone's needs, health directives, and abilities.
On August 1st, walk together with us across Florida by organizing your "Walk Your Way" in your neighborhood/park, home/backyard or by doing a car parade. Make sure whatever you do to spread the word about ALS and share your Walk by tagging us on our social media channels: @ALSFlorida.
Don't forget to use the following hashtags: #ALSInThisTogether, #ALSWalkYourWay, #ThanksHometownHeroes and #ALSFlorida. You can even host a pre- or post- Walk gathering (or both); take lots of photos and make lots of new memories that will last a lifetime!
2020 WALK YOUR WAY THEME: Hometown Heroes - whether it's a hero fighting ALS or their caregiver; our local emergency responders; our doctors, nurses and healthcare staff; our grocery clerks; or our farmers - in times like these we want to honor all of you! Thank you for all you do in our communities and in support of our mission to find a cure for ALS!
You either can use your previous login information or register as a new participant. When donating online, please make sure to donate to any member of the team (including yourself) so that it reflects team contributions from Sultana Squad. All donations are tax deductible.
Many thanks, and we look forward to seeing all of your posts and photos Insh'Allah. Feel free to invite family members and friends as well.
Regards,
Family of Nayyar Sultana Khan
