When my mom was diagnosed with ALS a little over 4 years ago we didn't know where to go and how to navigate this time.
Through the years my mom fought through ALS anytime we had a question whether it was "what should we expect next" or "what is a good equipment supplier to get a wheelchair from?" We were always surprised by the answer. See, what I didn't know, was that the local chapters do more than fundraise and funnel the money up to the nationwide organization. The local chapters are there to help us. When my dad called to ask which supplier to get a wheelchair from the ALS Association of Northern Ohio had a wheelchair delivered, when my mom wasn't able to speak anymore they brought an eye-tracking communicator. Anytime they couldn't directly provide help (which didn't happen often) they always pointed us in the right direction.
On April 19th of 2020, in the midst of the beginning of the pandemic, my mom lost her fight to ALS, just 3 short years after the official diagnosis. Some of the hardest years of my life, but it feels selfish to talk about how hard the years were for me knowing what my mom went through, but I know we could have never been able to navigate those years without the help of the ALS Association of Northern Ohio.

ABOUT ALS
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of a person with ALS averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis.
ALS can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease, yet it still costs loved ones an average of $250,000 a year to provide the care people living with ALS and their families need. Join the movement to provide help and hope today!
