#CarterCan

Welcome to our Team #CarterCan team page! From here, you can help support Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University as we participate in the Winship 5K Run/Walk.

In May 2023, Carter was a typical, seemingly healthy 27-year old, filling his calendar with weddings, nights out in Virginia Highlands, and cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs come the fall.  However, that all changed when Carter saw a gastroenterologist for some stomach issues, and 24-hours later was diagnosed with cancer, remaining in-patient for weeks as the oncologists and surgeons performed exploratory procedures to determine his precise condition. Carter was eventually diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia which had demonstrated aggressive qualities, including spreading from his blood to his lymph nodes.

Carter began a regimen of taking his "silver bullet" medication, imatinib, as well as beginning eight rounds of lumbar puncture chemotherapy, where the medicine was directly inserted into his spine. Carter fought bravely for seven-months, despite the constant in-patient hospitalization due to his weakened immune system, the painful side-effects from his chemotherapy, and isolation he had to undergo, including from his best bud, Charlie, a seven-pound maltipoo.  Then, the week of Christmas, team #CarterCan received the news we had so desperately longed for: Carter was cancer free!

Winship Cancer Institute holds a special place in our hearts. Carter's care team has held his family's hands every step of the way, and have quickly become friends as he begins the lifelong journey that is managing a chronic cancer. The dedication of Dr. Hunter, the compassion of the Winship nursing and care team, and the availability of the ICC Rollins Center, which provided a safe and efficient mechanism for emergency hospitalization for Carter's non-existent immune system, is what sustained Carter both physically and emotionally during his hardest days.

Serving more than 17,000 patients each year, Winship helps cancer patients throughout Georgia, the Southeast, and beyond by working to prevent, treat, and cure cancer. This is where science becomes hope. Your support is essential to fuel breakthrough research that leads to new and better treatments for cancer. Every step you take will help bring us one step closer to a cure. With your contribution today, we can make real progress to help save and improve the lives of those affected by cancer.

We're so excited to be joining other teams and supporters for the Winship 5K! Will you help us make a difference with a donation of any amount?

Thank you for supporting Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. Your contribution is greatly appreciated.
