My name is Dee and I love Emory! Why? 

Well, in 2019 at 28, I began experiencing pain and weakness in my lower extremities. Living in NC, I went back and forth to doctors trying my best to figure out what was wrong. With no answers and getting the run around, I came back home to Atlanta in January 2020 with the hopes of getting answers. 

In the the height of the pandemic, I was diagnosed in June 2020 with Myxopapilary Ependimoma, which completely infiltrated my spine. By this time I was no longer able to walk and was wearing a diaper. 

In October 2020, Dr. Daniel Refai performed a life saving surgery on me, with very little chances of survival and free of blood transfusions. With survival I most likely would never walk again. Needless to say I did survive, waking up to a kind nurse who didn’t leave my side. I went to the Shepherd Center one month later where I stayed for about 3 months.

I spent the summer of 2021 receiving radiation therapy at Emory’s Proton Therapy Center under the care of doctor Bree Eaton. 

Please join my team to thank Emory for their service, especially in the height of a deadly pandemic. I wouldn’t be able to walk this 5k without them
