2024 Winship 5K Run/Walk

Lynsey's Warriors

Welcome to Lynsey's Warriors Page. From here, you can help us support Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University as we participate in the Winship 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, September 28, 2024. You can also join our team and walk/run with us using 'Lynsey's Warriors' team name to join.

Winship Cancer Institute holds a special place in my heart. Lynsey began having what we thought were migraines in late January 2024. After a visit to a neurologist and an MRI, it was determined that she actually had a 2.8 x 3.9 x 3.1 cm tumor in her brain's 4th ventricle. We were set for surgery on February 27 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. The response to my Facebook posts asking my friends for prayer was absolutely phenomenal. We had dozens of churches and hundreds of people in our area and beyond praying not only for a positive outcome but for comfort and peace for our family. After a couple of days, friends, and friends of friends, suggested we get a second opinion, After my shock wore off a bit, I contacted Dr. Daniel Barrow on a Friday morning. Dr. Barrow was an acclaimed neurosurgeon mentioned by several. By that evening Dr. Barrow and I had exchanged several emails. By Saturday morning I was emailing with Dr. Edjah Nduom and we had a meeting set up with him for Monday morning. I was astonished that two highly qualified, renowned neurosurgeons were willing to take the time on such short, informal notice. As soon as we met with Dr. Nduom, we were impressed by him. He came into the meeting with a clear plan. Although he pretty much agreed with our first prognosis, we felt much more at ease because operating on brain tumors is his specialty. Dr. Nduom and his team were able to remove the tumor and Emory's neurosurgery ICU team took care of Lynsey for 9 days. Thankfully, the tumor, a choroid plexus papilloma, was benign! We are participating in this 5k because, although Lynsey's tumor was not cancerous, it very well could have been and I cannot imagine going through this ordeal without Dr. Nduom's and Emory's expertise. Additionally, we know so many affected by cancer and want to do what we can. God was and is definitely in control, not only in bringing us to Emory but continuing to amaze us with Lynsey's recovery. Lynsey was almost done with her occupational therapy degree at Brenau University. She was in the middle of field work when this occurred, and we were unsure what her recovery and therefore finishing her degree would look like. She had also just gotten engaged and we were just starting to plan for her wedding. September 5 will be 6 months post-operation and I am so proud to say Lynsey will be finishing her degree in December and moving toward her May 2025 wedding! Her personal experience will provide her with such amazing insights as she becomes an amazing occupational therapist.
