Event Description
Join Professor Kim Sloan and your fellow alumni for our 5th Annual “Alumni as Classroom Experts” professional development workshop for alumni working in the elementary and secondary education field. This year's workshop will focus on "Problems of Practice" - identifying them, creatively thinking about them, and approaching them with curiosity! Alumni will also have the opportunity to connect with Associate Professors of Curriculum & Pedagogy, Dr. Sylven Beck and Dr. Patricia Tate.
Alumni participants will engage in a series of exercises to find their problems of practice and then work in pairs or groups to creatively problem solve. The day includes a networking activity, “Problems of Practice” action research, and group discussion on how you can use the “Problems of Practice” work for your goals with students or with your peers as teacher-leaders. The day will conclude with each participant writing their manifestos of practice.

The cost of the workshop is $20 and includes a light breakfast and lunch. In addition, all participants will be awarded 4 professional development hours to be used in accordance with their schools' recertification policies.
This workshop is open to all GW alumni working in the elementary and secondary education field. Please register your attendance in advance at the below link.
Kim Sloan is a certified Reading Specialist and teaches the entire literacy block for the Elementary Education Model Program. This is her 12th year at GW and she loves working with a new group of pre-service educators every year. In addition to teaching at GW, she works part-time for the Fairfax County Public Schools Interagency Alternative Schools as a Literacy Specialist and Instructional Coach. She has previously taught graduate level courses for in-service teachers in writing across the curriculum at George Mason University and is the former Co-Director and Professional Development coordinator of the Northern Virginia Writing Project (NVWP). This academic year marks Kim's 27th year as an educator.
