Event Description
Join us for a conversation about the intersection of sport and the Black Lives Matter movement. This year, the U.S. has seen unprecedented social mobilization in response to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and countless others, and the shooting of Jacob Blake. Athletes from the WNBA and NBA have become national leaders and advocates for the issues faced by Black Americans today. In perhaps the most visible protests in sport since 1968, professional sports leagues around the world have paused playoff matches, established social justice funds and initiatives, and made the Black Lives Matter movement a visible and tangible part of every matchup.
Dr. Lindsay Sarah Krasnoff, ESIA BA ’99, an expert on sports diplomacy, will moderate a discussion on the Black Lives Matter movement in the context of athletics. Joining Lindsay are: Pops Mensah-Bonsu, CCAS BA ’06, who most recently served as the General Manager of the NBA G League Capital City Go-Go and is a former professional basketball player; and current George Washington University Head Coach of Women’s Basketball, and Assistant Coach for USA Women’s Basketball, Jen Rizzotti. The panelists will provide their insights and perspective on the leadership exhibited by the WNBA and NBA communities as well as the broader manifestation of this important social issue in the world of sport at GW, in the U.S., and around the world.
