Join the International Women of Elliott (I/WE) as we celebrate International Women's Day in conversation with Brooke Pearson, MIPP '16, who serves as Staff Program Manager for Google's Privacy Sandbox and is an I/WE Executive Circle member. Pearson will discuss her career bridging government, international relations, and cybersecurity, as well as her efforts to increase diversity in these fields.
In the tech industry, disruption is sought as a way to shake up the space, develop new products and platforms, and create the next big thing. Disruption, as it has happened in 2020 and beyond, has forced tech to a stark moment of introspection. In a year that has seen massive social mobilization following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, Pearson has used her platform, achievements, voice, and experience to ask a pertinent question “What if this could look different?” Pearson joined a social media movement called Share the Mic in Cyber, one of many similar initiatives that appeared in 2020. Share the Mic enables influencers and those in positions of power to amplify the voices of advocates and allies in discussing the racial issues that dominate the news all while showing that representation matters. Having worked at the State Department, Facebook, and Uber, before joining Google, she is no stranger to workplaces that struggle to fully grasp the lack of diversity in not just their workforce, but in the products and services they provide. By offering her passion, energy, talent, and platform, Pearson is talking about the experience of being Black in America, to an audience that until recently, wasn’t listening closely enough.
This conversation will be moderated by Elliott School senior Manush Mobarhan, president of our cosponsor Delta Phi Epsilon Professional Foreign Affairs Sorority. In addition to DPE, the Elliott School's Gender Equality Initiative in International Affairs and the Young Black Professionals in International Affairs are also cosponsors.
