Kaili Lockbeam from the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture tells the story of a Marylander who participated in the original wartime musical This is the Army. Her presentation will feature objects from that museum’s collection.
About the Musical
The American musical revue This is the Army premiered on Broadway in 1942. Staged as a benefit to support military families, the show cast hundreds of off-duty soldiers in a patriotic tale spanning both World Wars. Songs written by Irving Berlin include “This Is the Army Mr. Jones,” “I Left My Heart at the Stage Door Canteen,” and “What the Well-Dressed Man in Harlem Will Wear" sung by a chorus of African American soldiers.
About Kaili Lockbeam
Kaili Lockbeam is the registrar at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture. She previously earned a master’s degree from GW in Museum Studies and worked for more than five years at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, where she contributed to comprehensive inventory projects. At the Reginald F. Lewis Museum, Lockbeam has supported several exhibitions including Romare Bearden: Visionary Artist; Elizabeth Catlett: Artist as Activist; and most recently Freedom Bound: Runaways of the Chesapeake.
