Member Program: Textile Furnishings of Late Imperial China

The fabrics that furnished upper-class Chinese homes during the Ming (1369-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) dynasties reveal the aesthetic and technical virtuosity of Chinese textile artists as well as the sumptuous lifestyles enjoyed by the elite.
In this presentation, Curator Lee Talbot will feature a selection of furnishing fabrics from The Textile Museum Collection and others, including rugs; hangings for walls, beds, doors and windows; covers for chairs, tables and mirrors; and cushions and armrests. Drawing from a range of Ming and Qing sources — including paintings, non-fiction writings and illustrated novels — Talbot will discuss these textiles within their original cultural, historical and physical contexts.
About Lee Talbot
Lee Talbot joined The Textile Museum as a curator in 2007, specializing in East Asian textiles. He has curated numerous exhibitions and published catalogues, articles and textbook chapters. Talbot was previously curator at the Chung Young Yang Embroidery Museum in Seoul, Korea. He has a bachelor’s from Rhodes College, a MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management and a master’s from Bard Graduate Center.
