Walk, Run and Celebrate Survivorship
For 28 years, our Cancer Survivors’ Celebration & Walk has brought cancer survivors together with friends, family members and healthcare professionals who support them every step of the way. In the face of COVID-19, making the Walk virtual allows us to move forward in a way that ensures the health and safety of our community, while maintaining the spirit of this meaningful event.
Although we’ll miss coming together in Grant Park, this virtual celebration is an opportunity to share the experience with cancer survivors and supporters throughout the city, across the nation and around the world.
How Will the Virtual Cancer Survivors’ Celebration Work?
We are more committed than ever to honoring and celebrating cancer survivors on Sunday, June 6 (National Cancer Survivors Day). The time and place are up to you!
- Instead of bringing thousands of people together in person, we’re asking you to join us June 6 while we practice social distancing, by walking, running or being active any way you choose. If cycling, gardening, climbing stairs, or yoga is your favorite way to move — just do it.
- Invite your friends and family to a virtual dance party we’ll provide the playlist!
- We encourage you to share photos and videos with the hashtag #LurieCelebrates on the Lurie Cancer Center Facebook Page, Instagram and Twitter. Starting now, and throughout the day on June 6, let us know why you walk and the reasons you celebrate!
How Do I Register for the Virtual Event?
Register online. You can contact us with questions at firstname.lastname@example.org or 312.926.7133. Please consider supporting our efforts by personalizing your online fundraising page after you register. Fundraising is optional and no minimum is required.
NOTE: In-person registration at Northwestern Memorial Hospital will not be offered this year.
I’ve Registered! What Should I Look Forward To?
Registrants will receive a custom 28th Annual Cancer Survivors’ Celebration & Walk t-shirt (purple t-shirts for cancer survivors, white t-shirts for supporters). If you register by May 14, your T-shirts will be mailed to you in time for the event to the addresses provided during online registration. Registrants who miss the deadline will receive their t-shirts after the event. This year, you will also have the option to minimize event costs and advance our fundraising efforts by contributing the cost of your t-shirt and shipping.
From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 6 (National Cancer Survivors Day), registrants will have online access to our Virtual Program. Tools and videos will include: Welcome from Lurie Cancer Center Director, Dr. Leonidas Platanias; an energizing warmup; inspiring cancer survivors’ stories; a virtual Cancer Survivors Celebration Walk & 5K medal; a special playlist created for our Cancer Survivors’ Celebration — and more!
How Can I Fundraise for the Virtual Cancer Survivors’ Celebration & Walk?
As we confront these unprecedented challenges head on, our commitment to impactful cancer research has never been stronger. In addition to transforming the lives of people facing cancer, this year you will have an option to support our heroes in the fight against COVID-19. You can choose to direct your donation to fund lifesaving research that may benefit healthcare professionals and cancer patients at higher risk of complications.
We need research to accelerate progress for leading-edge cancer treatments, improve outcomes and advance the efforts of our heroes working tirelessly on behalf of the most vulnerable populations. Imagine what we can accomplish together!
