In November 2016, our world was forever changed when we received the heart-wrenching news that our beloved father, Francis, had been diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. This progressive and relentless neuromuscular disease took away his ability to walk, speak, swallow, and ultimately, to breathe. On May 25, 2020, after a courageous 4-year battle, our dad left this world, leaving behind a void that can never be filled.
Francis was more than just a father, brother, uncle, and friend. He was a pillar of strength, a source of unwavering love, and a man who touched the lives of everyone he encountered. Now, it's our turn to honor his memory and continue his legacy by taking action against ALS.
Why We Walk
As we reflect on our father's journey, we're reminded of the tremendous impact that the ALS Association had on our family. When we felt lost and overwhelmed, the Northern Ohio Chapter of the ALS Association extended a helping hand, providing us with vital information and the support we so desperately needed. Our local case worker became a guiding light, leading us through the challenges of this disease and helping us navigate the unknown.
The ALS Association not only educated us about ALS but also extended practical support by lending us equipment that enhanced our father's quality of life. They opened their lending closet to us, providing a scooter that offered our father newfound mobility and independence during a time when every ounce of independence was invaluable.
