My first symptoms occurred in April of 2006, which were difficulty pronouncing words. I participated in 5K walks, completing the Houston 5K and Seabrook 10K in 2010. Walking became more difficult as my symptoms progressed. I had neck surgery due to stenosis (narrowing) of the spinal canal. I was diagnosed with Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS) in January of 2011; a month later my husband died. I had been to the Mayo Clinic twice up to that point, but symptoms such as gait, balance, and speech were not evident. I had difficulty adjusting to relying on a walker and accepting help. Eventually, I inspired others by being grateful in my situation, painting in oils for others, and writing thank you notes to others. The ALS Foundation has furnished my motorized chair, speech assist, Trilogy Ventilator, and cough assist machine. Dr. Apple's Clinic is wonderful, has great physicians, and allowed me to meet PLS colleagues.
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries.
That’s why we’re participating in the Walk to Defeat ALS. To bring hope. To raise awareness. To provide resources and services to families free of charge. To help unlock the mystery of ALS and find the key to treatments a cure. Will you join us?
ABOUT PLS
Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS) is a rare neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive muscle weakness in the voluntary muscles. PLS belongs to a group of disorders known as motor neuron diseases. PLS only affects upper motor neurons. It is often referred to as a benign variant of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).
Wherever symptoms originate (the legs, arms, hands, speech and swallowing muscles), all will eventually be affected. In time, assistive devices are needed, such as canes, walkers, or wheelchairs. Speech therapy and communication aids may become necessary as well. PLS has a normal lifespan.
